Routine Check Up

Once a year I go to my OB, Dra. V. for my check up. It’s scheduled every November of the year. And yes I had that penciled in, in my calendar. But late October, a couple weeks back, I felt pain. I thought it was “balisawsaw” so I used hot compress and the pain subsided and I was able to sleep finally. The next day, I could still feel pain, but only on the latter part of peeing. So I knew, it must be UTI. Shite! After work, I went and visited Dra. V. and it was confirmed after checking my urine sample that I had moderate UTI. Prescribed meds and she also asked for me to go have a transvaginal ultrasound at Festival Mall. (Nope not pregnant..) She wants to see my ovaries I guess.. So I went and was measured. And the Dra. there said I was ok, no tumors no bumps.

I was a happy camper! I was to text Dra. V. the results and so I did, and she replied, “nothing to worry about, let’s talk on Saturday.”

She explained to me that I have Adenomyosis and I’m Polycystic (PCOS). I’m 27 so she says I’m a good candidate for oral meds, so she took some blood samples and good thing I passed! (my liver’s good, I’m not diabetic, and my cholesterol level is good considering I am polycystic I’m on the pill right now and metformin to treat the PCOS. As for Ade, I have a six-month treatment, that I get 1 shot a month. Hopefully this works and my uterus goes back to being pear-shaped, Dra says right now its apple shaped. As explained to me, when I get my period, blood also overspills in my uterus :( As for the polycystic, its like I don’t have an off-switch

In women with PCOS, the ovary doesn’t make all of the hormones it needs for any of the eggs to fully mature. Follicles may start to grow and build up fluid. But no one follicle becomes large enough. Instead, some follicles may remain as cysts. Since no follicle becomes large enough and no egg matures or is released, ovulation does not occur and the hormone progesterone is not made. Without progesterone, a woman’s menstrual cycle is irregular or absent. Plus, the cysts make male hormones, which also prevent ovulation.

If the 6 month regimen does not work the first time, I have another 2 sets of 6 months.. She says normally women don’t even get to the 2nd 6-month cycle because the treatment works.. Hopefully I’m one of the “normal” women she knows…

  1. Oh my AB. It sounds complicated. After the 6-month thing and the next 6-month thing, are you going to be 100% okay? Like it’s not gonna come back?

  3. that i didn’t ask.. if it can come back :(.. nag focus lang ako sa task at hand.. that it would go back to pear shaped nga.. and hopefully di maubos eggs ko because of the poly thing..

  4. @jenie, you should always have a check up scheduled.. kasi nakakatakot baka biglang meron need ng attention.. i look at the UTI a blessing in disguise, coz I would’ve just gotten the normal routine check up and not bothered to have the ultra sound.. ( as i was asked last year, i didn’t go.. :( ) as a precaution this time, i did..
